Presentation:   ASHRAE recently released a new standard for the &amp;ldquo;Design of High Performance, Green Buildings&amp;rdquo; (Standard 189.1-2009).  The Standard provides minimum requirements for a high-performance green building, and was developed with the intent of balancing environmental factors involved with the sitting, design, construction, and planning for the operation of buildings.  This session provides a detailed look at the standard, background on its development and some discussion on how it might be used and adopted by various localities and organizations.
 
Speaker: THOMAS M. LAWRENCE, Ph.D, P.E., LEED-AP is a Public Service Associate with the University of Georgia, and has 30 years of professional experience in engineering and environmentally related fields. Before going back for his Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering at Purdue, he spent approximately 20 of those years in progressively more responsible engineering and management positions in industry and consulting. He is the chair of ASHRAE Technical Committee 2.8, &amp;ldquo;Building Environmental Impact and Sustainability&amp;rdquo;, and is a member of the committee which wrote the ASHRAE standard on high-performance green buildings (Standard 189.1). As an ASHRAE Distinguished Lecturer, he gives presentations and workshops on green building design at venues around the world. At the University of Georgia, Dr. Lawrence teaches courses in Building HVAC, Green Building Design, Residential Building Design, and Heat Transfer. As part of the Engineering Outreach program, he is helping to coordinate building energy reduction activities within the entire university system for the state of Georgia.    
Dr. Lawrence has a B.S. with Highest Distinction honors in Environmental Science from Purdue University (1978), a M.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Oregon State University (1982) and a second M.S. degree in Engineering Management from Washington University earned in 1989. He received a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from Purdue University in the spring of 2004 researching the impacts of demand-controlled ventilation on energy consumption and indoor air quality in smaller commercial buildings. </description>

Presentation: Lee Alcorn will enlighten us on the latest and greatest developments of Variable Refrigerant Flow Air-Conditioning Technology. As an attendee you will learn the do's and don'ts and how to apply this technology to the correct application. This presentation will cover the advantages of applying this technology and why it would be a better selection. The presentation will end with a question and answer session.
Speaker: Ms. Lee Alcorn is a degreed mechanical engineer and is LEED AP certified.  She was a member of the local Triangle Chapter of ASHRAE and past president before her relocation to the northeast. Currently Lee is a Key Account Manager in the commercial AC group of  LG  and is based in New Jersey. Ms. Alcorn has worked in the refrigeration field for many years and has work for companies such as Daikin-McQuay, Honeywell,   Johnson Controls. Lee's background includes various positions all being related to the refrigeration field.</description>

Details: The tour will start with a description of the facility system including what has to happen on an event day. We will then tour the main basement mechanical room which houses the ice making equipment and comfort cooling water cooled chillers. Next we will tour other parts of the facility including the air handling unit mechanical room, rooftop equipment,   catwalk. The tour will conclude in the basement with a question   answer period.
Also: The Hurricanes will be having a Front Lawn Party before the game. There will be live music (Aftershock, the Triangle&amp;rsquo;s premier 80&amp;rsquo;s rock cover band), inflatable rides and games for the kids,   food/beverage vendors.</description>

Presentation: The presentation starts with the US guidelines and standards of Healthcare Facilities Design, then it discusses the typical environment-controlled spaces, such as operating room (operation theatre), infection isolation room, protective environments and critical-care room. It further discuses architectural considerations, temperature and humidity controls, ventilation requirements, air-handling systems, flow diagrams, pressurization, filtrations and UV treatment, as well as water-borne microbial contamination control, etc. Many design samples and photos are included.
Speaker: ASHRAE Distinguished Lecturer, Mr. Wei Sun; Mr. Sun received his BSME from University of Shanghai for Science and Technology in China in 1985, and was accepted as a MSME student in Shanghai Jiaotong University in China in 1987. In 1988 he was awarded with an academic scholarship from University of Kentucky in the United States and then received his MSAE degree from University of Kentucky in 1992. Since then Mr. Sun has been working in the US as a design and consulting engineer for 18 years in building mechanical systems design, HVAC R consulting and research. He is a registered Professional Engineer in 12 states in the United States.</description>
