On Tuesday April 28, the Triangle chapter's Membership Promotion chair Chris Silcott traveled to Greenville, NC to visit the Student Chapter of ASHRAE at East Carolina University. While at ECU, Chris teamed up with the ECU chapter's advisor Tarek Abdel-Salam and University Steam Plant supervisors Royce Thigpen and Neal Thorne to lead a tour of the ECU steam plant.
The objective of the tour was for the students to gain hands-on knowledge of the required processes for steam generation and distribution. The tour consisted of a 45 minute presentation on the basics of steam generation and watertube boilers, followed by a walkthrough of the plant. While touring the plant, the students were able to witness watertube boilers in operation and view the furnace of a 40,000 PPH industrial watertube boiler. Also while touring the plant, Chris explained the condensate recovery, deaeration, and air preheating processes in the plant.

Luke Domermuth, North Carolina
B.S. in Mechanical Engineering, North Carolina State University
Why an engineering career in HVAC&R?
I have always been interested in how things work and desire to improve the world and apply my knowledge by developing new technologies and improving existing technologies. I learned about ASHRAE by word of mouth from other students and I joined in 2007 for the benefits and scholarship opportunities and for the networking and knowledge experiences.
What has ASHRAE meant for your career?
I have learned a great deal about the HVAC&R industry, where ASHRAE is headed, and all the numerous opportunities available to me as a mechanical engineer. Being involved in many organizations is one of the most important things you can do to further your career and provide a way for you to stand out. It is also a great way to know more about the people in your school and major...and expand your network.
The Triangle Chapter was able to award one national scholarship and 2 local
scholarships to College Students studying in our field.

Once again the Triangle Chapter was privileged this year to have a number of local students awarded scholarships. For the second year in a row, one of the Reuben Trane scholarships was awarded to student at NCSU.This year the award was presented to Carrie Baughman who is a student studying Mechanical Engineering at NC State University. The award was presented at one of our regular chapter meetings and Carrie’s parents were able to attend. The Reuben Trane Award is a $10,000 scholarship payable over 2 years that is awarded by society.
The Paul Stahl Scholarship was also awarded this year to a Graduating High School Senior who is pursuing an interest in the HVAC industry. This years winner is Spencer Jones.Spencer’s father Judson has worked in the HVAC industry for many years with Hoffman and Hoffman. We congratulate Spencer and wish him success as he attends the University of South Carolina studying Engineering.
The third scholarship this year is awarded in honor of Manoel Gonzolez who was the student advisor at NC State for many years. This scholarship is awarded to a member of the student chapter at NC State based on their participation in the chapter and their academic qualifications. This years winner is Christopher Dulin who is a Senior in Mechanical Engineering.
Congratulations to all our scholarship winners and continued success in their studies.
The NC State Student ASHRAE chapter has come a long way over the last three years thanks to the efforts of a number of students and Triangle ASHRAE members. The chapter currently has a good base of students and solid leadership thanks to the Student President – Silas George – and the Faculty Advisor Dr. Stephen Terry. Thanks to all of you who have volunteered your time to come and speak to the students about our industry and what we do. I know it sounds a little “Whitney Houston” but these “children are our future”. Our industry needs these young Engineers to help it continue to grow and advance and we need to continue to attract good people.
If you are interested in speaking at one of the upcoming events at NCSU the schedule is listed below. This is a great opportunity to find a summer intern or part time employee. We already have a number of students from ASHRAE who have started working at some of our local companies thanks to their involvement in ASHRAE. Please contact Ken Tursam (
