Membership Promotion Night PDF Print E-mail

Membership Promotion Night: Thanks to all who attended the first Membership Promotion night at the Triangle Chapter meeting! For those of you who missed it, the first Membership Promotion night was held at the chapter meeting on November 12. We had a great turnout, and a special visit from Drayton Stott, the Region IV Vice-Chair for Membership Promotion. In addition to showing the video “Sustaining Momentum,” Drayton spoke about membership benefits and what being an ASHRAE member means to him. An added bonus to attending this meeting was that prospective ASHRAE members got to attend the meeting for free! We had a great turnout, and I want to extend a special thank you to all of the NCSU student chapter members who attended. Keep an eye out for the next Membership Promotion night coming up in the Spring!

YEA: Young Engineers in ASHRAE (YEA) consists of all members age 35 or less. Currently, the Triangle Chapter is made up of about 100 YEA Members, or about 25% of the Chapter. This year, Silas George has taken on the role of YEA co-chair and will be working directly with the Membership Promotion Committee to schedule and organize YEA events. We are currently accepting ideas for these events – if you are interested in submitting ideas please email them to Silas at This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it or Chris Silcott at This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it .

Also, thanks to all who have renewed their membership and paid their Society and Chapter dues on time! This is just a quick reminder to everyone else that one of our key objectives is to lower the delinquency rates, so Please, Please, Please send in your renewals! Also, you can save time and renew online at www.ashrae.org – just follow the link on the left side of the page.

Career Benefits from ASHRAE Membership PDF Print E-mail
10-02-2009 10:01 Christopher Silcott

As we start a new year, think about how ASHRAE and your membership in ASHRAE have benefited you in your career. Think about it – how has ASHRAE benefited you? You may not have given the question much thought, but the following people on the Membership Committee were asked this question and here are some of the answers:

• Chris Edmondson – “Networking and speaking / meeting skills.”
• Billy Austin – “Getting to know the most important people in HVAC” and “Giving back – adding to those who made my career possible”.
• Isabelle Lavoie, Region II – “Helped me make and develop very good durable business relationships”.
• Scott Blackmore, Region VI – “Developing a network of individuals all over the world who I can call on to discuss / help solve problems” and “ASHRAE is the premier source for technical information in our industry”.

Are you getting all this out of ASHRAE?

Do you know what ASHRAE is doing now and where ASHRAE is going? Do you know the stated goals of ASHRAE. Did you know that ASHRAE:

• Will lead in the advancement of sustainable building design and operations.
• Will be a world class provider of education and certification programs. (Healthcare design is available now).
• Will position itself as a premier provider of HVAC&R expertise.
• Will be a global leader in the HVAC&R community.

Are you getting all this out of your ASHRAE membership? If someone at work tells you they aren’t a member of ASHRAE and ask you why should they join – this is why. If you are in this industry, you should be associated with the leader! Look at all you can get out of ASHRAE.

ASHRAE is about energy efficiency and sustainable building design.

• “Overshadowing everything else is the question of conservation of natural resources. For how much longer are we going to waste …. resources to save first-cost only of buildings?” by S.R. Lewis

You may not remember S.R. Lewis. He was President of ASHVE, not ASHRAE and he wrote this statement in 1914!!!

I think we have procrastinated long enough - it’s time we got moving in the right direction! ASHRAE is going in the right direction and has some very good answers to the hard questions about energy and good buildings.

Wow!! Are you are getting everything out of your ASHRAE membership? It’s there for you – show up, bring your friends; all of ASHRAE is available to you!!

ASHRAE's new affiliate member grade is ideal for younger professionals and new members. You must be under 30 years of age and can only hold this grade for up to three cumulative years. The grade was established to promote young membership and is a part of the student transfer program.

As a note to recent graduates, it allows you to remain in ASHRAE the first year out of college at your current dues rates of $16, $40 for the second year and $40 for the third. As you know, regular ASHRAE membership is $165 annually. This represents over $100 in annual savings! You can pay per year or you can pay for all three years up front for $96. You'll maintain your tenure as an ASHRAE member and also get the annual ASHRAE handbooks offered to regular members. That's a deal you can't beat!

We want to congratulate our own Matt Rowe, for being nominated as an ASHRAE "New Face of Engineering"! Matt is currently our chapter's Treasurer and is in line to be the chapter's President in a couple years. He is now employed at James M. Pleasants Company of Raleigh. See the press release from ASHRAE's headquarters below.

Raleigh Engineer Nominated as ASHRAE New Face of Engineering

ATLANTA -
Matthew Rowe is one of the 16 nominees received by the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) for the New Faces of Engineering recognition program. The program, part of National Engineers Week and co-sponsored by ASHRAE, promotes the accomplishments of young engineers by highlighting their
engineering contributions and the resulting impact on public welfare. The program targets those age 30 and younger. ASHRAE has submitted its top five nominees to the National Engineers Week Committee. The top nominee from each engineering society represented on the committee will appear in a full-page ad in USA Today during National
Engineers Week, Feb. 17-23, 2008.

Rowe is a sales engineer in Raleigh, N.C. He holds a bachelor of science, mechanical engineering, minor in graphics communications, North Carolina State University, Raleigh, N.C. Rowe has managed and sold over $7 million in projects during his first three years of work. He is most proud of a small project involving a community school in need of new HVAC equipment. He designed a system that used an air-cooled variable speed drive chiller, saving the school $4,400 a year in energy costs. This allowed the small school to afford more books and better resources for students.

ASHRAE, founded in 1894, is an international organization of some 50,000 persons. ASHRAE fulfills its mission of advancing heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration to serve humanity and promote a sustainable world through research, standards writing, publishing and continuing education.
