2008 Triangle Walk to Defeat ALS PDF Print E-mail

Dear Friends,

The ALS Association – Jim “Catfish” Hunter Chapter is hosting its annual Walk to Defeat ALS on October 25, 2008 on the Credit Suisse Campus in RTP (7033 Louis Stephens Drive, Morrisville, NC). I am the captain of “The Nancy Clements Crew,” a team formed in honor of my mother who was recently diagnosed with ALS, and I would love for you to join.

Our team has three goals: To raise AWARENESS, EDUCATION and MONEY:

AWARENESS:
In the U.S. alone, approximately 30,000 people are living with ALS. Furthermore, 300,000 people who are alive and well today will die from this disease. Notable people affected by ALS include:

  • American baseball star Lou Gehrig
  • British theoretical physicist Stephen Hawking
  • American guitarist and composer Jason Becker
  • Vietnam War survivor and prison camp escapee Dieter Dengler about whom the movie Rescue Dawn is based.
  • American baseball star Jim “Catfish” Hunter
  • American football star Orlando Thomas
  • American folk guitarist Lead Belly
  • American football star Glenn Montgomery
  • Morrie Schwartz, a college professor about whom the book Tuesdays With Morrie was written
Awareness is extremely important because the cause is unknown and there is no cure.

EDUCATION:

Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), aka Lou Gehrig’s disease, is a degenerative nerve disease that causes the upper and lower motor neurons to degenerate. The result is a loss of muscle control and muscle itself. In many cases, victims of the disease ultimately lose the ability to initiate and control all voluntary movement except the eyes.

MONEY: (You knew it was coming!)

This event is the major fund raiser for the Jim “Catfish” Hunter Chapter, an organization that does wonderful things for ALS patients and their families. By donating money, you will help fund research to find a cause, cure and/or means of controlling the progression of ALS. Until ALS is eliminated, the ALS Association will continue to aid those in need by helping to ease the day-to-day burdens this disease inflicts upon its victims.

So, I am asking for your help. Please visit the website to join our team or donate to help with our effort by clicking here. Follow the link and scroll down to the team roster. Select a team member to view their personal page and press DONATE or WALK to join us.

Sincerely,
Jillian Clements

September 10, 2008 - Chapter Meeting PDF Print E-mail

This is an exciting time to be a part of the Triangle Chapter! Our Chapter received 3 of the top 4 awards in addition to several other awards at the Chapters Regional Conference (CRC) in August. The ‘Rudy trophy’ is presented each year to the top chapter in our region. It was exciting to hear Panya’s name called at the CRC award banquet to receive the ‘Rudy’. You definitely will want to be present as Ira Poston, Director and Regional Chair, presents the awards again to our chapter and highlights the accomplishments of the Triangle Chapter last year.

Nancy Clements, Triangle Chapter president for 2006-07, was diagnosed last year with ALS. Nancy will be attending the meeting next week to talk about an upcoming ALS Walk-A-Thon in Morrisville on October 25. We would like to have as many as possible to participate in the Walk-A-Thon to raise ALS research funds in Nancy’s honor. Nancy will have sign-up information next week. We would like to have at least 50 of our members participating in Walk-A-Thon in support of Nancy.

The following is an update from Nancy regarding her current status: “I have been on medical disability since June. After hurting my back, I realized I needed to take time to do some personal things while I am still independent. I have since graduated from back physical therapy and am pain free. My hands are weakened, I can type, but not write. My legs are okay, but I cannot walk like I used to or as long. I have slow progression overall for now and am fortunate to have limbs onset instead of bubar onset (swallowing, speaking, breathing).

I have been working on getting into a western lithium clinical trial for ALS. A recent Italian trial showed great results with lithium combined with rilusole which I take. My Duke doctor is skeptical about the randomization and science of the Italian study. Yesterday, I received a call back from St. Louis for an appointment Aug. 21. I will travel there 7 times over the next 12 months. The really good news is that there is no placebo. The control group will be historically based
.”

Bob Lofgren has put together some great programs for this year. I look forward to seeing you next week as we kick off another exciting year for Triangle ASHRAE! We had a great year last year and I’m looking forward to an even better 2008-09 year!!
